Asked Questions |
Q.
Why is the bandwidth testing button disabled?
A. The bandwidth test function is designed
to provide an accurate measurement of
the Abilene high-speed internet connection.
If you are not connected to Abilene, then
the bandwidth test is disabled. For more
information, see the Glossary
tab above.
Q. Why did the Abilene test fail?
A. The Internet2 Detective uses only UDP
packets to determine whether or not you
can reach Abilene. These packets could
be blocked by your network’s firewall
or gateway. If you network is not functional
when you start the Detective, it may erroneously
notify you about the presence of a firewall.
If you are connected to your network and
it is not your firewall it way be the
network interface the detective has selected.
See the questions that follow for interface
details.

following page: http://detective.internet2.edu/firewalls.html
Q. How do I tell the detective
which network interface to test?
A. You can set the network interface that
the detective uses by choosing from the
list at the bottom of the 'Tests' tab.
The default setting is 'Automatic' and
this is recommended for most users. If
the detective is not giving you the results
you expect, though, you may wish to try
a different interface. This is useful
when your computer is connected to multiple
networks or in some cases when a loopback
adapter is installed. The detective may
be testing the wrong network (i.e. wirless
instead of wired) so you may be getting
undesired results. The interface selection
feature is also useful for testing multiple
network connections.
Q. Why can't I run a Bandwidth
or IPv6 test on a manually selected
interface?
A. The detective is unable to bind dynamic
network addresses to these features. This
means only the default port may be used
but this may change in future versions. |
